CALM & PUNK GALLERY hosts Chisato Yasui’s solo exhibition, Whereabouts – In a Liminal State, from March 28 (Fri) to April 20 (Sun), 2025.This new exhibition follows Yasui’s previous solo show, Whereabouts, held at GASBON METABOLISM in September 2024, and marks her first solo exhibition in Tokyo in about eight years.
Yasui has continuously created works that go beyond the conventional boundaries of ceramics through a dialogue between materials and her own body.
In her previous solo exhibition Whereabouts, the artworks in the space stood out for its coexistence of linear, multi-faceted forms and rounded shapes. This time, however, her new works have transformed into shapes with softer curves and more ambiguous contours.
In the space of the gallery, visitors encounter a variety of works, including Profile20, a large ceramic sculpture over two meters tall, plus/minus, a newly created piece featuring delicate layers of white slip, and the en series, whose vivid hues evoke the depth of oil paintings.
As the title Whereabouts – In a Liminal State suggests, Yasui has recently incorporated hand movements and bodily postures that alter contours into her work. This approach parallels the way clay momentarily melts during high-temperature firing, reflecting her impulse toward new expressions. By pursuing “forms in the midst of forming,” Yasui explores how shapes evolve and transform. We invite you to experience this artistic journey at CALM & PUNK GALLERY.
