It happened six years ago.
Four students got together and opened a poster exhibition without any particular theme. Themes in designing are raison d’etre of the designs and are true purposes in visual communication. Likewise there doesn’t exist such words without meanings, nor design without them.
But, it sometimes pop up in your mind. Out of the blue. Those meaningless scribbles you did on your textbooks or notebooks. All the shapes and lines without meanings. All the boxes you filled out in black without any intention. The very first moment you dissolved paint. Random lines you drew with pencils. You simply enjoyed those activities themselves.
These memories inspired the concept of Mysterious Graphics; an exhibition of graphics without any purpose, which would be an easy theme that any art college student could think of. But, choosing such a childish theme was our expression of rebellion. And we believe it is all the more a meaningful theme to dig up now, with those student years past and having become professional artists.
This second exhibition features 11 artists and designers who are spreading their activities not only in Japan but also overseas. We are meeting up to display our own perspectives of Mysterious Graphics.
