CALM & PUNK GALLERY is proud to present “Houescape”, a solo exhibition by artist Akira Somekawa. This marks his second solo-exhibition at CALM&PUNK GALLERY in almost 10 years, with the previous one titled “akirasomecamera” being held back in 2007. Since then, we have had an ongoing discussion with the artist about doing a second exhibition, but despite a mutual desire to do so, passionate wills on both sides resulted in discussions that although interesting, brought no final conclusion…Until now. It is therefore with great pleasure that we are able present “HOUESCAPE”, and hope that the artist as well people attending the exhibition are able to look at the works with at least a small feeling of being “captured”.
Lastly, Mr. Kenji Takazawa wrote a splendid preface to the works and the exhibition so please read it at the venue if you have the chance.
Akira Somekawa
1970 Born in Kanagawa prefecture.
1995 Traveled to the UK.
2000 Solo Exhibition at The Showroom in London。
2001 Took part in the group exhibition “The Side effects of Urethane” held at Jam Factory in London.
2002 Took part in the group exhibition “This is me”which was showcased in London, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Paris. This five-city tour featured artists like Mike Milles, James Jarvis, Ed Templeton, IMAI TOONZ, Sugiyama Hiro and others.
2004 Returned to Japan.
2007 Solo exhibition at CALM&PUNK GALLERY.
2009 Published the photobook “akirasomecamera”.
2012 Presented work at Hyeres fashion and photo festival.
2013 Photobook “NOW-HERE” is released in November.
2016 Photobook “HOUESCAPE” is released in August.
