CALM & PUNK GALLERY will hold a solo exhibition by photographer Miyu Terasawa titled BREATH, LIE DOWN EXCEPT FOR DYING IT’S JUST A SCAR from Friday, January 24, 2025, to Sunday, February 9, 2025. This exhibition, following her solo show held last November at Space CORD in Seoul, South Korea, will feature photographic works using crashed cars captured in Seongsu-dong, South Korea, as motifs, alongside newly created pieces produced in Japan.
Miyu Terasawa began showcasing her work featuring automobiles as subjects with her solo exhibition UNOWNED at LAID BUG in 2021. In addition to her artistic practice, she has earned recognition, primarily in Tokyo, in the field of commercial photography, capturing talents and celebrities for advertisements and publications.
This exhibition presents a series of works that vividly capture the shocking and striking appearance of wrecked cars. Crushed and distorted front panels, cracked glass, headlights, and exposed skeletal structures – these details are imprinted onto vibrant photographic paper, stimulating the viewer’s “curious gaze.” At the same time, the creative process reflects Terasawa’s recent approach to her own mental health, as well as a projection of “the possibility and longing for regeneration.” This is symbolized by the act of repairing a damaged car and restoring it to its original state, echoing the theme of rebirth and recovery.
As the exhibition title BREATH, LIE DOWN EXCEPT FOR DYING IT’S JUST A SCAR suggests, this show is not simply an exhibition of self-enclosed fetishism. Rather, through the subject of wrecked cars, Terasawa’s gaze follows the “aftermath” of unexpected accidents – events that disrupt the everyday – and the lives of those affected. Her work captures a landscape where happiness and misfortune can topple in an instant, revealing the underlying motorized* social structure of contemporary society and Terasawa’s own unique visual language.
The violence depicted by frames of iron and glass, and the gaze that is drawn forth – Terasawa’s captured fragments challenge viewers to explore the relationship between certain visual images and humanity. This exhibition features new works debuting in Japan, a ZINE created specifically for the show, and the soundtrack E-400, curated and mixed by Terasawa. We warmly invite you to experience this exhibition at CALM & PUNK GALLERY.
*Motorization – the phenomenon in which automobiles become widely prevalent in society and among the general public, becoming a necessity in daily life
