From November 8 to November 24, 2024, CALM & PUNK GALLERY will host ‘Sugar Coated,’ an exhibition featuring American animator Jeron Braxton and Korean artist Bang Soyun.
In this exhibition, the two artists explore complex inner layers concealed beneath surface appearances, using ‘sugar coating’ as a metaphor. Just as sugar’s sweetness masks discomfort or unpleasant realities, the outward layers of beauty and pleasure probe themes of violence and oppression within society, ultimately reflecting on corporeality in the digital age.

Jeron Braxton is an artist renowned for his unique animation style rooted in his experiences with video games. His work addresses contemporary issues such as Black culture, social justice, and mental health through nostalgic video game-inspired visuals. Braxton’s animations have garnered attention through commercial collaborations with figures like Virgil Abloh and The Weeknd, and he recently produced his first full-length animated film, ‘SLIME,’ in collaboration with rapper Kid Cudi.
In this exhibition, Braxton critiques consumerism through a new game set in an American convenience store. Focusing on pharmaceuticals and sugar—both often overconsumed in daily life in both Japanese and American societies—he depicts how these elements dominate our lives.

Bang Soyun focuses on the ambiguous boundaries between the digital and physical worlds in her work. Using 3D modeling software to visualize independent narratives, Bang reflects on the personal impact of transforming these narratives into paintings. The exhibition will include new works from her ‘Black Painting’ series, which debuted at the ART OnO art fair in Korea and will be featured in her solo exhibition, ‘Polymorph the Night,’ opening on October 31 at SPACESO in Korea.
This series draws inspiration from the unexpected ‘blackness’ caused by a glitch in the Blender software, which turned the characters’ skin black. This accidental feature led her to reveal faces more explicitly than in previous works. Confronting the contrasts between digital and physical canvases, Bang examines elements she had unconsciously concealed, embracing the unexpected beauty of error as a turning point in her creative process.

The exhibition’s opening reception will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 6 PM, with both Jeron Braxton and Bang Soyun in attendance. We look forward to welcoming you to this event.
