CALM & PUNK GALLERY is excited to present a solo exhibition, “ Exhibit 4”

System of Culture was formed by Toshimitsu Komatsu and Yuma Sasaki in 2017. In 2021, they were awarded the Patricia Karallis Award at the Japan Photo Award 2021, and in 2022, on the recommendation of Sayoko Ozawa (curator of the Yokohama Museum of Art), they exhibited at the VOCA exhibition.

Currently, we are working mainly on the mechanism and function of photography to explore the frame of the medium and the conditions surrounding it. Works inspired by paintings and movies are characterized by carefully printed screens constructed and drawn according to the direction, leading to a viewing experience that draws memories. Occasionally, the images are reminiscent of impressionist paintings, pictorialism, and other forms of art from the 19 th century and beyond, which have been defined and delineated in modern times.

The exhibition will consist of approximately 15 works from the 4 representative series “EMULSION”, “Diaoyang”, “Sacred Place” and “Landscape”, and will also feature large 2.5 meter works.
